Well, well, well – Mayor Davis has done it again. Hot on the heels of announcing that ferry service is coming to Bayonne, Davis pulls in two U.S. Senators to jointly announce with him that 2,700 jobs are coming to Bayonne. Yes you read it right, 2,700 jobs coming to Bayonne. As reported by Corey McDonald of the Jersey Journal:”
Local officials joined U.S. Senators Cory Booker and Bob Menendez on Thursday to announce a deal to bring new e-commerce and supply chain logistics companies to the former Military Ocean Terminal, a deal they say will create thousands of new jobs.
Amid rainy conditions and surrounded by the skeleton of a once major military complex, officials announced a deal to “construct up to 1.6 million square feet of modern, ‘next generation’ industrial warehouse space” on property that has been vacant for well over a decade.
The new complex will bring 2,700 permanent jobs into the city, as well as roughly 750 construction jobs during the site’s renovation, officials said.
“I know it’s a little chilly, but when you’re announcing 2,700 jobs, it’s a sunny day in Bayonne,” Mayor Jimmy Davis said, adding that jobs will be “made available to the Bayonne residents through recruitment and education programs.”
East Rutherford-based Lincoln Equities Group is in the process of acquiring the land from High Star Capital. The deal is expected to close by May.
The equities group, headed by President Joel Bergstein, will knock down the old warehouses — all of which date back to World War II — and construct new facilities that will house a number of companies that officials say will facilitate economic growth in the Port of New York and New Jersey.”
So in the past two weeks it has been announced by Mayor Davis that Costco is coming, a ferry service is coming, and 2,700 union jobs are coming to Bayonne. The promise of development at the former MOT are finally being realized. To paraphrase Senator Booker, Mayor Davis is preaching the gospel of prosperity. The Mayor and City Council deserve a standing ovation for truly turning the City around.
